Elephant Crossing

The Calgary Zoo's family of Asian elephants are living large in their new home, Elephant Crossing. The area has double the indoor and triple the outdoor space of the old exhibit, a wide-open design, and vaulted ceilings. The new habitat even has a massive skylight.

Of course, the elephants aren't the only ones enjoying the long-anticipated exhibit, which opened in June 2007. Visitors can now view the big outdoor yard from a new amphitheatre.

A new indoor seating area makes year-round elephant programming possible. Visitors will be able to bond with these magnificent creatures no matter what the weather outside is like.

Also new to the indoor habitat is a constantly changing multipurpose space that will showcase a wide variety of travelling exhibits, providing dynamic new experiences for visitors on an ongoing basis.

In addition, everyone will now be able to enjoy "Bathtime" with the elephants, formerly an exclusively behind-the-scenes experience.

With its elegant blend of traditional and modern styles, Elephant Crossing was named one of the most innovative architectural projects of 2007 by Award Magazine .
